Renewal of the approach lighting system for RWY 10 Keflavik airport (BIKF)

Content Responsibility: Isavia Ohf

1 Introduction

The project consists of the renewal of the approach lighting system for Runway 10, including associated electrical cabling, foundations, and approach light masts.
The construction area has been divided into three (3) zones.
During the construction period, the use of runways 10 and 28 may be restricted during certain phases of the works.

1.1 RWY 01/19

BIKF tower will use RWY 01/19 when wind speeds do not exceed 25 knots.

1.2 Obstacle Clearance Altitude (OCA)

The construction works will affect the approach minima for Runway 10, including VOR, VORTAC, and NDB approaches.
Consequently, the Obstacle Clearance Altitude (OCA) for all approach categories will be increased to 390 ft for the duration of the construction period.

1.3 Approach lighting system and ILS

The approach lighting system and the ILS approach to runway 10 will be unavailable while construction works are in progress.

1.4 Declared distances

Declared distances for runway 10 will remain unchanged during the construction period.
TODA for runway 28 will be reduced by 300 m part of the construction period.

1.5 NOTAM

A NOTAM regarding changes to the relevant declared distances will be issued as required.

2 General

2.1 Estimated construction period

The estimated construction period is from 27 th of April 2026 to 28 th August 2026.

2.2 Construction zones

2.2.1 Zone A:

Zone A is located 43.5 m offset from the centreline of Taxiways K and S, corresponding to the safety area for aircraft requiring aerodrome reference code letter E.
When works are in progress within zone A, Taxiways K4 and S4 will be closed. In addition, runways 10 and 28 will be closed for take-offs and landings while the works are in progress.

2.2.2 Zone B:

Zone B follows Zone A and extends approximately 320 m west of the threshold of runway 10.
When works are in progress within Area B, runways 10 and 28 will be closed for take-offs and landings while the works are in progress.

2.2.3 Zone C:

Zone C follows Zone B and extends approximately 900 m west of the threshold of runway 10.
When works are in progress within Zone C, runways 10 and 28 will remain open for take-offs and landings.
However, during the construction period, the Obstacle Clearance Altitude (OCA) for VOR, VORTAC, and NDB approaches to Runway 10 will be increased to 390 ft for all approach categories.
