Framkvæmdir á flugbraut 10/28 á Keflavíkurflugvelli /
Construction work on RWY 10/28 at Keflavik Airport

Content Responsibility: Isavia ohf.

1 Introduction

From April 2025 to September 2025 extensive construction will take place on RWY 10/28.
These are:
  • Renewal of jet arresting gear on RWY 10
  • TWY K-4: Renewal of stop bar and surface maintenance up to RWY 10/28
  • TWY S-4: Renewal of stop bar and surface maintenance up to RWY 10/28
  • New approach lights for RWY 10
The construction will affect the use of the runway and normal operation will not be in place.
RWY 10/28 will not be available in full length during the construction period and aircraft will use TWY B-1 in both directions.
  • Temporary threshold will be at TWY B-1
  • TWY B-1 will be used in both directions
RWY 10
  • TORA, LDA, ASDA will be 2110 meters
  • TODA will be 2370 meters
RWY 28
  • TORA, LDA, ASDA, TODA will be 2110 meters
Color coding for edge lights and centerline lights for RWY 28 will not be available.
NOTAM will be issued.
Flight procedures will change temporarily.
In the next four years all jet arresting gears will be replaced at Keflavík airport, therefore RWY limitations are anticipated until the year 2028.
Information will be published in due time.

2 General

2.1 Construction effect on operation

RWY  01/19 will be used as much as possible.
When RWY 10 needs to be used it could affect the capacity of the airport as aircraft will be instructed to use TWY B.

Aircraft taxi time, after landing, could increase as aircraft might need to evacuate at end of RWY 10.
ILS approaches for RWY 10 will not be available during the construction period resulting in CAT II not being available.
VFR and RNP approaches will be available.
The construction will have limited effect on the capacity of RWY 28, ILS approach flight will not be available, instead visual approaches or RNAV are authorized.

2.2 Construction effect on aircraft taxiing

Impact on aircraft taxiing will be limited when RWY 10/28 is in use.
Aircraft taxiing is unavailable for S-4 and K-4 that can in some cases mean longer taxiing route from East Apron to RWY 10 and from RWY 10/28 at East Apron.
No-entry bar at B1 will not be in use and no stop bar will be active at stopline 10 on B1.

2.3 Construction effect on stand occupancy

The construction could have impact on stand occupancy at FLE Terminal Apron as taxiing options are limited from RWY 10/28.

3 Flight safety

3.1 Construction impact on flight safety

The construction will increase contractors’ activity on the construction site and adjacent area.
It will create a more complex working environment for Keflavik Airport and its users.
NOTAM will be issued identifying changes related to the construction.
Risk assessment will be done together with contractors, airport users and key stakeholders. After the risk assessment the Airport operator will issue a “Method of work plan” where all safety aspects related to the constructions will be defined.

4 Flight procedures

4.1 Impact on flight procedures

The following approach procedures published in the Icelandic Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) will be suspended during the construction period:
  • ILS Z and Y RWY 10
  • RNP RWY 10
  • VOR RWY 10
  • NDB RWY 10
  • VORTAC RWY 10 (CAT A-B) (CAT C-D)
  • ILS Z and Y RWY 28
Once construction begins, these approach procedures will be deactivated via NOTAM and subsequently removed from the AIP during the period April 17 – October 2, 2025.
A temporary approach procedure for use during the construction period will be published in the AIP on March 20, 2025 and deactivated via NOTAM until construction begins.
  • RNP Y RWY 10
