KEFLAVIK – New Construction - New taxiway and rapid exit taxiway (RET)

Content Responsibility: Isavia, Keflavik Airport

1 Introduction

1.1 Estimated validity

Estimated construction period is from September 2021 through December 2022.
Construction on or adjacent to RWY/ TWY and the safety area will be announced by NOTAM when necessary

1.2 Project

New taxiway and rapid exit taxiway (RET) - Keflavik International Airport
Excavation, fillings, overlays, edge- and centerline lights.
The taxiway will be constructed parallel to existing TWY E (Echo). On the north side, the new TWY will link to existing TWY N (November-4), it will cross TWY K (Kilo) and RWY 10-28 and finally on the southeast side the new TWY will link to existing TWY E (Echo).
RET will connect to RWY 10-28 and the new TWY.
TWY N-4 and TWY K-2 will be temporarily closed or traffic limited when working on the connection to the new TWY. In addition, some restrictions will be on RWY 10-28 while working on connections to the RWY.
If temporary work will be carried out within the safety zone after opening of the TWY it will be carried out in full cooperation with the Control tower.
A NOTAM will be published when needed.
The project is divided into three main phases (worked simultaneously):
  • Northern part – Between TWY N and TWY K
  • Center – Between TWY K and RWY 10-28
  • Southern part – South of RWY 10-28
Each phase is divided into parts within the safety area as well as out of the safety area.
Work components are as follows:
  • Material transport on side
  • Excavation
  • Fillings
  • Overlay and adjustments
  • Electricity – Edge and centerline lights system
  • Drainage
  • Signs and markings
This supplement covers all phases.

2 Estimated Phases

  • Phase 1 (northern part)
  • Phase 2 (center)
  • Phase 3 (southern part)
It is estimated that all phases will be carried out simultaneously from September 2021 through December 2022.
Phases will be activated with NOTAM.
The construction work will affect the airport operation, but the effect will be minimized as much as possible.
The new TWY connections to existing TWY system will not all be carried out at the same time and will be worked on in a cooperation with the tower and operation.
It will be worked simultaneously at the three areas, as mentioned before. See figures (appendix, chapter 3).
During construction big vehicles, machines and equipment will be crossing TWY N-4, K-2 and S-3.
Traffic will be controlled by the ATC.
The new TWY will be opened in its entirety when all three phases are completed.
RET will connect from RWY 10-28 to the new TWY.
Barriers and red flashing lights will be placed to demarcate work area/construction side.
It will be ensured that machines and equipment will not be within the RWY and TWY safety zone when air traffic movement is on adjacent movement areas.
